Government Citizens Social Media Engagement Awards to honour excellence in government-citizen interaction

Johannesburg - In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the Government Citizens Social Media Engagement Awards will recognise government and political entities excelling in citizen engagement via social media.

The awards ceremony will take place on 6 February 2025 in Cape Town, ahead of the opening of parliament.

The awards will honour provincial governments, municipalities (metros, district, and local), government agencies and councils, state-owned enterprises (SOEs), and political parties represented in the national parliament.

These awards celebrate the vital role of social media in fostering transparent, interactive governance, bridging communication gaps with citizens, and building public trust.

By highlighting institutions and political parties that leverage digital platforms effectively, the awards underscore the power of social media to amplify citizens' voices and address their needs.

With more citizens turning to social media for timely information and direct communication, the awards aim to promote best practices that enhance inclusivity and transparency in governance.

"This initiative reinforces the need for government commitment to transparency, responsiveness, and accessibility," says Gerrit Davids, Lead at TaranisCo Advisory.

Categories will be judged on responsiveness, public engagement, and interaction, celebrating government leaders who prioritise citizen inclusion through effective social media communication.
