South African sports betting companies engage more than 3 million followers and fans on Facebook.
Sports betting companies in South Africa are experiencing high levels of social media engagement, with millions of punters following and liking their pages on Facebook.
It seems that the South African sports betting scene is heating up on social media, and the latest TaranisCo Social Media Report breaks down the key metrics of the most dominant brands using data gathered over the last 28 days.
Betway South Africa (@betwaysouthafrica) leads the pack with a strong Page Performance Index (PPI) of 63%, boasting a healthy 641K followers and a decent post interaction rate of 0.18%. They strategically post 12 times a day, keeping their audience engaged.
Hollywoodbets SA (@hollywoodbets) is close behind Betway with a PPI of 62%, although they have a smaller follower base of 302K. However, they're experiencing explosive follower growth (6.1%) and have a decent post-interaction rate (0.09%) despite posting less frequently (5.8 times a day).
While Supabets Gaming Group (@supabets) has a lower PPI at 46%, they have a loyal and highly engaged audience with a very high follower growth rate (1.0%) and a decent post-interaction rate (0.073%). However, their posting frequency could be improved (currently, 3.3 times a day) to capitalize on their momentum.
Playa Bets (@playabetssa) is another brand that shows promising growth potential with a strong follower growth rate (1.8%) despite a lower PPI (26%). They might need to focus on boosting their post-interaction rate (0.026%) and engagement with their audience.
Some of the other dominant brands are not doing so well, and in particular, World Sports Betting (@worldsportsbet) has a very low PPI (3.0%) despite a sizeable follower base (221k). They're experiencing a decline in followers (-0.042%) and low post interaction (0.017%). They need to revamp their social media strategy.
Bet.co.za (@betcoza) is in the same situation as World Sports Betting and has a low PPI (1.0%) and declining followers (-0.030%). Engagement is also very low (0.0064%). A complete overhaul of their social media approach is necessary.
Other new entrants like SuperSportBet (@supersportbetza) are showing promising signs of getting active engagement on Facebook, and it has a rapidly growing following (31k, 12% growth). Their posting frequency (2.0 times a day) seems reasonable for their follower base size.
At the other end of the scale, the industry has several brands, like GBets, Easybet, Bettabets, Sportingbet, and 10bet South Africa, that show varying levels of engagement and follower growth.
According to Gerrit Davids, Lead at TaranisCo Advisory, “Betway and Hollywoodbets are currently leading the pack in terms of follower base, engagement, and overall social media performance. However, the landscape is constantly evolving."
Davids says, "Brands like Supabets and Playa Bets are rising stars that are experiencing impressive follower growth and demonstrate strong audience engagement. They are ones to watch in the coming months."
“However, not all brands are faring as well. Brands like World Sports Betting and Bet.co.za are currently lagging in terms of social media performance, and both brands could benefit significantly from a strategic social media overhaul."
"Despite being a newcomer, SuperSportBet is already attracting a loyal and engaged following, and they have a strong foundation to build upon."
"While Betway and Hollywoodbets currently hold the lead, there's room for growth and innovation. This is an exciting space to watch, and only time will tell who will emerge victorious,” said Davids.
Davids says, “A monthly report on the performance of sports betting brands will be released leading up to the inaugural Sports Betting Brands Social Media Awards that is taking place in Cape Town on 24 January 2025, a day before the Cape Town Met horse race.”
